This post is the fourth in our series of Nebraska FFA Officers where you get to know the 2014-15 team. This month, let’s meet State Secretary Colton Flower from the Scottsbluff FFA Chapter.
What FFA activities were you involved in during high school?
Throughout high school I competed in many contests including; livestock evaluation and management, veterinary sciences, job interview, and business plan. I also participated in our local canned food drive and county fair livestock show.
In high school who did you look up to as a role model and why?
My father, Steve Flower, has always been my greatest role model. My dad has always sacrificed for my siblings and I to have every opportunity and then some. He has strong morals which are seen in how he carries himself and the choices me makes. He also has a drive to serve others by committing his time to the county fair board, numerous charity events, FFA, and 4-H.
What do you do for fun?
When I am home in Scottsbluff, I enjoy fishing, working with our family FFA livestock projects, and spending time with friends. In Lincoln, I enjoy seeing all the city has to offer whether that is seeing a baseball game, checking out the Haymarket, or finding new places to eat.
What were your Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAEs) and how did you become involved in them?
I worked at a farm and ranch supply store, Bomgaars. My family often shopped at the store so it just made sense to work there. I no longer work there since leaving for school last fall, however I continue my SAE by working for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln poultry department where I assist in the management and production of nearly 5,000 birds.
Where are you attending college and what are you majoring in?
I am a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I am studying Agricultural Education Leadership.
What activities are you becoming involved with as a college student?
I am involved in the Nebraska Human Resource Institute where I mentor a Lincoln Public School third grader named Quinton. I am also a University of Nebraska FFA Alumni member, a University Ambassador, and a member Of Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity.
What are your future career goals?
I hope to one day work for an agricultural based company in human resources and talent development. I also plan to one day hold a public service position.
What inspired you to run for a state officer position?
FFA has given me so much, it taught me skills, grown my confidence, found friendships, and it showed to me the passion I have for agriculture and serving others.
What has been the best part of your officer year so far?
This is very hard to answer. It’s a tie. Chapter Officer Leadership Training conference was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Getting to spend time with such enthusiastic members as well as seeing them grow was amazing. State Presidents’ Conference in D.C. was one of the greatest experiences as well. Getting to know other offices from all over the country and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and learn about their specific associations, states, and agriculture was an eye-opening experience.
What words of advice do you have for FFA members across the state?
FFA will open more doors than you can ever imagine. You just have to walk through them as they are presented
What has been your biggest moment of learning as a state officer?
At the State Presidents’ Conference, we were having a reflective session with the Marine Memorial site lit up in the background. As we sat and listened to the national officers speak about the sacrifices those before have made for us not only to defend our nation on the frontlines but here in fields of corn and in classrooms full of students. It really put things into perspective. Their ending message was that we are fortunate to have these opportunities and we must take advantage of them. I think this is one of the best messages I have ever received and strive to make the most of every advantage that I get.
